You can easily fix the most common problem with your furnace or air conditioner.
A dirty furnace filter is the biggest cause of air conditioner and furnace failures.
As a filter gets dirty, it actually starts blocking the air trying to pass through it. This can cause an air conditioner to ice up or a furnace to over heat. You may even notice less air coming from the vents during the cooling mode.
If your AC starts icing or freezing up, you will see frost on the copper lines that connect the outdoor AC to the indoor coil. If this happens follow these easy steps.
1. Turn off your Air Conditioner at the Thermostat.
2. Check the air filter in the furnace (this filter gets dirty year round since the furnace blower is used for both heating and cooling).
3. If the filter is pretty dirty (ie hard to see through it if held up to a light), change it.
4. Wait for about 3 hours then turn the AC back on. This should give the ice time to melt off the indoor coil.
If this doesn’t fix it, call your HVAC technician, but this should prevent having to pay a tech to change your filter.
Stay cool!
